Service Tips for Spring Commissioning:
Why do I need to "commission" my boat in the spring? This is a good question that many boat owners ask, and deserves an explanation especially in these difficult financial times when we are all trying to minimize our expenses. Although there is a good chance that an engine will start up and run after a period in storage, there are also things that can occur over the winter that can prevent a smooth start up process in the spring. Our Basic Boat Commissioning service is designed to address the most critical items that should be addressed prior to spring start up such as:

  • Changing both water separating and on engine fuel filters and checking fuel samples: Many engine manufacturers are recommending multiple filter changes during the season following the change to E-10 fuel and its tendency to attract water and degenerate over time. Nearly 75% of engine problems we have encountered over the past couple seasons have been due to excessive water content in the fuel. This is critical following a period of storage when condensation can accumulate in fuel tanks, lines and filters. Cape Ann Marine takes fuel samples from filters and from other engine fuel components to check for presence of water and/or contaminants. Certain engine fuel filters should only be changed by a certified technician.

  • Battery service: Batteries should be charged and load tested to ensure that they not only are charged, but are able to handle the voltage load they are rated for. Also, all battery terminals should be wire brushed and connected tightly onto the correct terminal posts. Many boats come in with no start problems due to weak batteries and dirty or loose terminals.

  • Electrical systems check: Testing electrical components, especially bilge pumps, prior to launching ensures the safety of the vessel and its passengers.

In addition to the Basic Commissioning Service we also offer:

  • Water systems reconnect, fill and flush: Though most livewell and washdown water pumps do not require service to run in the spring, most boats with fresh water systems that were winterized at CAM will require the reconnecting of plumbing and filling of water tanks prior to use per recommended practice by the ABYC (American Boating and Yacht Council).

  • Zincs: Both internal and external zincs should be replaced annually, and preferably, just prior to launch to maximize useful life as they will erode with exposure to water.

For more information on E-10 fuel, feel free to stop by the service desk for an informative bulletin that answers many commonly asked questions about E-10 fuel and its effect on marine engines.
